Van Dijk could receive FOUR-game ban for red card v Newcastle

Virgil van Dijk is at risk of receiving a four-match suspension after picking up a red card against Newcastle, The Times report.

The Dutchman saw red in the first half of the game for a tackle on Alexander Isak. The foul itself would give him a one-game ban.

But the suspension could be extended to four fixtures if it is decided that the Liverpool captain used foul language aimed at the match official.

The defender was extremely frustrated with the referee's decision to send him off and supposedly said 'f***ing joke' to him. He also initially refused to leave the pitch.

The FA will make a decision after studying referee John Brooks' report. The playbook mentions 'improper behaviour' and it could be applied in this case to extend Van Dijk's suspension.
