Expected points in La Liga: Barca still on top, Real Madrid overperform by SEVENTEEN pts

Xavi is right to refer to the 'Big Data' and claim that Barcelona have deserved more this season.

The xPTS [expected points] stat, which takes into account xG [expected goals] and xGA [expected conceded goals], shows Barca should be top of La Liga right now.

1. Barcelona - 70.2 points

2. Real Madrid - 70.1 points

3. Atletico Madrid - 61.1 points

4. Athletic Club - 57.1 points

5. Girona - 56.4 points

As it often happens, Real Madrid massively overperform thanks to being quite clinical in front of goal; Jude Bellingham, for example, has scored five more goals than he should've done. Overall, the Whites have overperformed by 17 points (Barca by only three) which is really crazy.

Girona, who have temporarily beaten Barca to second place, have overperformed by almost 18 points – they should be in fifth place at the moment.

Barca should really work on their conversion rate and minimise the number of goals they concede out of thin air.
